How to add medical services to your spa or salon
There are two ways to add medical services to a spa or salon. You can become a med spa, with a medical director, licensed staff and in-office procedures. Or you can offer take-home prescription programs through a telehealth partner, where the partner's clinicians prescribe and a pharmacy ships to your client, and your business never practices medicine.
The first is a bigger, regulated business change. The second can launch in days. This guide covers what each involves so you can choose, or do both in order.
Updated October 29, 2026. General information, not legal advice; rules differ by state.
Path one: become a med spa
A med spa performs medical procedures such as injectables, many laser and energy treatments, and IV therapy. That brings medical obligations: physician oversight (usually a medical director), licensed clinicians to perform or supervise treatments, good faith exams before procedures, written protocols, malpractice coverage, and a plan for complications.
Many states also restrict who may own a medical practice, so a spa owned by a non-physician may need a specific legal structure, often a management company working with a physician-owned practice. Budget for a healthcare attorney before you buy equipment.
Path two: offer prescription programs through a telehealth partner
Some of the most requested wellness treatments, such as prescription skincare, hair restoration and weight management, are taken at home. A telehealth partner's clinicians can evaluate and prescribe for your clients online, and a pharmacy ships the medication to them, so your staff perform no procedure and you need no medical director for it.
Your role is the part you are already good at: recommending the service to clients who trust you, with a branded page and QR codes in your space. The partner handles intake, clinician review, prescriptions, billing and compliance.
Which services fit which business
Salons and day spas fit prescription skincare and hair restoration, which follow naturally from facials and hair services. Barbershops fit hair restoration. Med spas can add all three alongside in-office treatments, and gyms fit weight management.
Whatever you offer, keep marketing to the service and the experience. Clinical claims about results, and anything resembling a diagnosis, belong to the clinician, not your front desk or your social posts.
The numbers on the partner path
With KiteMD, you pay a $149 monthly platform fee and keep 85% of each membership; KiteMD keeps 15%. At a $109 monthly membership, that is about $93 a month per active client, so two active clients cover the platform fee. Patients pay for their medication separately, so it is never your cost.
Launch typically takes under a week: you get a branded page, QR codes for your space, and a dashboard showing scans, subscribers and earnings.
Common questions
- Can a salon sell prescription skincare?
- Not directly: a prescription requires a licensed clinician's evaluation. Through a telehealth partner, the partner's clinician evaluates your client and prescribes, and a pharmacy ships the product to them.
- Can an esthetician give Botox?
- Generally no. Neurotoxin injections are medical procedures that most states limit to licensed clinicians such as physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and, under supervision, registered nurses. Check your state's rules.
- Do I need a medical director to offer weight loss programs?
- Not for take-home programs run through a telehealth partner whose clinicians evaluate and prescribe for each client. You would need medical oversight if your own staff administer injections or other procedures on site.
- How long does it take to start?
- Becoming a med spa can take months of legal, staffing and compliance work. A telehealth partner program typically launches in under a week.
